The Science of Poetry: Katharine Coles, Tricia Dearborn, Anne Elvey and Bronwyn Lovell

In this episode the panel ‘The Science of Poetry’ recorded at the Poetry on the Move festival held in Canberra in 2019.

It’s a commonplace that science is interested in objective and provable facts, while poetry is subjective: charting human experience and sensation. But this view neglects the many centuries in which poetry has responded to dazzling insights of the “new philosophy”, as John Donne called it, and science has explained itself with metaphor and intimations of the unknowable. In this panel we ask a group of scientifically-inclined poets how science works in and through their poetry, and what poetry can offer in understanding a changing physical world.
